  21. That is the question...there is no easy answer, but I will try to explain
  22. how things work on these lists so that people will understand why
  23. "off-topic" posts are such an issue.

  25. The way the lists are run right now, I do have to pay a certain amount of
  26. money for each and every message posted to this list...the system is
  27. actually based upon the amount of data that passes through the mail server
  28. these lists are run from.
  29.  
  30. So, if you send a 1K message to the list, it gets distributed to the
  31. 1,000 or so subscribers and adds up to about 1meg worth of data
  32. transferred through the mailing list server.  I currently pay about $5
  33. for every 100megs worth of data transferred...this comes out to about 5
  34. cents per 1K message posted to the list.  (so now when you guys post your
  35. 2 cents worth, it's actually about 5 cents worth. =) )

  37. Having said this, I want to make it TOTALLY clear that I do NOT want to
  38. discourage anyone from posting messages to these lists...I read and enjoy
  39. most of the conversations that take place here and even though many of
  40. them may be considered off-topic, I don't to see them stop.

  42. However, I do get annoyed when discussions degenerate into pissing
  43. contests ("my computer is better than yours" or "you're a scumbag because
  44. you didn't pay for that program") and lately I'm really getting annoyed
  45. when people quote entire messages just to add one line of text saying
  46. something "Right On!" or "AMEN!".

  48. These are the kinds of messages that cost me a lot of money because
  49. people feel that they must throw in their 2 cents (or 5 cents) to the
  50. debate or because people have not properly edited their replies and the
  51. same message segments get sent over and over and over.

  53. Now maybe you're thinking that 5 cents per message isn't really a big
  54. deal...to tell you the truth, it isn't.  But when you're living on a
  55. disability income (like I am) and the bills add up to more money than you
  56. have in your checking balance, those nickels become very hard to justify
  57. in the monthly budget.  This isn't to say that I'm starving (just look at
  58. my Lightspeed tutorials and you'll see that I eat quite well!) but it does
  59. mean that I can't purchase some of the cool new stuff I want to add to my
  60. pile of goodies.

  62. I see that I'm wracking up a bunch of nickels on this message alone, so
  63. I'll close by telling everyone to keep posting to these lists, but just
  64. look over your message quickly before sending it and ask yourself if it
  65. could use a little editing or if it should be sent at all.
